Again it depends on how long, what kind and at what intensity you bike at. The most important thing is to find an activity that you enjoy because if you enjoy it you are more likely to stick with it. If you choose biking buy yourself a bike computer(they're under $20). Set a goal for yourself, either a certain distance or a set time. First just reach your goal. After that try to increase your speed. Don't over do it, small increases work best.

Re: Walking versus Biking

I think overall walking is better because the whole body is used walking while biking seems to be mostly legwork but if you are very overweight Biking is a good way to strenghthen the calves and knee joints until walking for longer periods become more comfortable.

Re: Walking versus Biking

Thanks for this info!

You can calculate how many calories you burn during different activities by going to the Calorie Burn Calculator in My Fitness plan (located under the activities tab at the top of the page). I hope that helps!

I hate to rain on the bike-loving parade here, but actually, if she is trying to get somewhere that is 1.5 miles away, walking there would burn more calories. The number of calories burned is related to how long you perform a given activity. Walking 1.5 miles would take around a 1/2 hour, which would burn at least 100 calories. Biking 1.5 miles would only take about 10 minutes or less, burning maybe 50 calories, at most. So if you are traveling to a specific place, walking there would burn more calories.

However, if you get up in the morning and say, I'm going to go exercise for an hour, biking would be better exercise for that hour than walking. If you walk for an hour, you may travel a total of 3 or so miles, burning about 200-250 calories. If you bike for a complete hour, you will travel at least 10 miles, if not many more, and burn more calories.

Hope I helped =)

Re: Walking versus Biking

Biking definatly. Time doesnt matter its how hard you are working not how long. Walking for 10 minutes only burns about 50 calories..biking for 10 minutes burns 100 calories because you are working harder. U can definantly feel the difference

Walking versus Biking

Which burns more calories, walking or biking? I know it depends on how fast you go for each...so maybe there is no answer. But if I need to get somewhere that is 1.5 miles away...which would be the better choice of transportation?

Biking I feel like I'm working harder, like I can feel it in my muscles, but the time is much less. Walking you're moving for longer, but I don't feel it physically as much.
