Hello everyone! My name is Megan and I have gained 25 pounds in the last year! I knew that I had been gaining weight all year, but I have refused to get on the scale to see the damage I had actually done. I had my physical yesterday, and I was forced to confront the truth. I moved to Pittsburgh a year ago to go to law school. I didn't know anyone here, and ended up dropping out because I realized it really wasn't for me. I also met my boyfriend, who has really bad eating habits that I have picked up. I don't blame him at all and take responsibility for my choices. When I first moved here, I weighed 118 lbs (I'm 5'3). I learned yesterday that I weigh 143. That is a 25 pound weight gain in one year!!! That is about the average a woman gains during pregnancy. Well I feel horrible about the way I look and I can't fit into any of my clothes. I want to lose 25 pounds by March 2 (when I start nursing school), but I'm scared I won't be able to do it. I just wanted some support to hear that it can be done, or to hear from someone that is in my shoes. I just love the taste of food so much!

Hi Megan. Your post sounds a lot like my situation. I am also 5'3", I have been about a steady 127 my whole adult life (I was once 115-118, but was Okay with 127 as I got older and had 2 kids)... Well, over the last 9 months, I have gotten up to 152 (which is where I am now) so I totally understand how you feel.  I have no excuses - it wasn't the pregnancy, not the kids,... I just LOVE food too! And it was coming on slow and steady - I didn't want to face it, I just keep wearing "loose" clothes and stretchy stuff, until I recently realized that I have nothing to wear and have outgrown all my clothes along the way! I, too, am looking to lose the weight by March.  March 7th is when I go to a new job and would like to have slimmed back down by then and feel like my old self again.  I also feel horrible and even though the weight is bothering me, I can't seem to stop stuffing my face.  I am stumbled across this site today and am starting the slim fast diet tomorrow.  Wish me luck!

You can still get back into the game and start over.  I dropped a 100 pounds from 380's down to 280 and looking to get to 279 and within a VERY short time I jumped up to 325... with in months not a year.  I am working on dropping it again and have lost 3 slow pounds.

I need to get back into exercising in the morning with my Biggest Loser DVD's and riding my stationary bike.

You need to take cantrol of your eating habits and your boyfriend should be encouraging you and not derailing you.  If he doesn't realize he's a bad influence on you than tell him...if he continues than you will have a very long uphill journey.

I wish you luck and in Nursing...study hard...I tried it and didn't do well with working full-time and school full time...don't let me scare you....just study hard...good luck

That is the funny (or not-so-funny) thing about weight - it is so much work to take off (the healthy way) and so easy to put it (and then some!) back on!

I started my journey today. Like you, Megan, I totally understand having a significant other who has poor eating habits. My husband hates vegetables and has the metabolism of a 7 year old (I am just jealous!), he is in the Marine Corps and stays in perfect shape regardless of eating pizza, hot wings, McDonald's, rich pasta dishes, etc.  He is very supportive that my metablism is coming to a halt (I am 4 yrs older than him), yet I know that it is STILL hard when you want to change your habits, and although supportive, they are under no obligation to change theirs.  I suppose we will really conquer and have to show how strong we really are right ;-) For instance, my husband just put a pizza in the oven for him.  I opt'ed to eat before it is done, so I won't be tempted - I had a Slim Fast shake and a low-cal wheat sandwhich.

I know you can do it by March. And I can too.  That is plenty of time! I had my daughter exactly a year ago and by March I had already lost all my pregnancy weight and a few extra pounds too! (which as I said before, have gained all back).  That even included not being able to exercise for 6 weeks (c-section). I know pregnancy weight is a bit different, but I still know that March is plenty of realistic time to reach our goal Megan! WE CAN DO IT!

Hi KristenMarie.  It seems we are in the same situation.  Most of my life, I have been able to eat whatever I wanted (namely junk food!) and never gain weight.  In fact, while in college, I would regularly buy a weight gain smoothie because I couldn't seem to gain weight.  In my early 20s, I weighed between 110-120 pounds.  I got married when I was 25 and weighed 125 pounds.  A year later I was pregnant.  During my first pregnancy, I gained 60 pounds!  I lost most of it by breastfeeding.  During my next two pregnancies, I gained 40 and 33 pounds.  By breastfeeding, I lost most of the weight from those pregnancies too.  My youngest will be four in April, and I have probably gained 10 or more pounds since then plus the weight I could not lose with my 3 pregnancies.  I have noticed that my clothes I bought for a trip in October do not fit me now.  I just turned 36 last week, and I feel old and digusting.  I have always had really skinny lower legs and arms, and now with the weight gain, my upper arms flap and my thighs and belly are GROSS and look way out of proportion!!!  I have a Mardi Gras ball to go to in February.  Looking at my pictures from the last 3 years, you can tell the weight progression.  It is very depressing.  I am hoping to look a little better this year.  Like you, I cannot stop eating -- especially junk!!  I plan to start on Monday.  Wish me luck too!
