Cheap and Healthy at Home

  • Like you said, oatmeal is most definitely my big one. I like to buy the offbrand fruit 'n' cream kind (bananas and cream, peaches and cream, etc) because I think it's even more delicious and still healthy, all for a tiny price. I also find it filling for one serving only being like a half a cup or less.

Cream of Wheat is similar in price to Oatmeal and is cheap... provides vitamins like calcium and iron.

Canned fruit. I love love love mandarin oranges in light syrup and they are healthy of course. Fruit cocktail is another one, as long as it's in a light syrup or canned in pear juice or something. I find it easier to buy canned fruit because I can divide it up into little containers to take with me on the go and don't have to worry about whole fruit spoiling on the counter or after I cut it up.

I also think it's very cheap to grow your own vegetables. I grew some lettuce this year and it made the most delicious salad. Also carrots, green beans, radishes, and I am still waiting on potatoes and tomatoes. I was surprised that the food I grew in the garden actually tasted good when I would have never tried it canned from the grocery.

And in the frozen meals section I find that Michelina's Lean Gourmet meals are cheap ($1-$1.50 or so) and the ones I've tried are good. My favorite is the five-cheese lasagna... I could eat it for two meals every day of the week and it's only 280 Calories. Throwing in a salad makes it even better.

If you're on a budget you can still eat healthy, you just have to look at some of the most basic things we should have in our diets.

  • There was no appropriate group for me to ask this in, but I think this group makes the most sense. What foods do you think are relatively cheap and healthy? Everybody, add something!

    1. Eggs

    2. Tuna

    3. Oatmeal

    4. Frozen vegetables
