Picky Eater -- Need Ideas!

  • The thing I call a "veggie cage" is listed under "grill basket" on Amazon.  I think I got mine at Kohls a couple years ago, so they aren't super-rare or anything.  Look for something that looks like two wire racks hinged together on one side and with a long handle on the other.  You open the basket made by the two racks and trap whatever you want to grill inside.  The handle removes so you can put the rack down on the grill, remove the handle and easily close your grill.  You reattach the handle when you want to flip the contraption over.  The point of the veggie cage/grill basket is really to keep small or delicate things from falling through your grill, especially when trying to flip them over otherwise.  People use them for fish a lot too.  I'm assuming you can't really "lose" food inside the Foreman grill (I don't have one so just guessing) so the veggie cage isn't needed.

  • I really like those ideas... even the potato fry idea. I don't like potatoes because of their flavorlessness and I think that the spices you mentioned would make them delicious.

What does a veggie cage look like, and where would I find one? I have never heard of one before. I do have a grill outside and then a George Foreman grill... which should I use if I want to use a veggie cage? I'm guessing I'd have to use the real one, but when winter comes around it is rough to use the outside grill, so would a Foreman grill work, do you think?

Thanks for the ideas... they are great!

  • Do you have a grill?  A grill pan on the stovetop would work, but I'm living off my little grill on the patio for dinners this summer.  If you don't like sauces, try dry spices rubbed on chicken or sprinkled on veggies.  Easy enough to find a garlic-based one to stay close to what you like at first.  For veggies, I bought this sort of veggie cage for grilling.  I know you said you don't like potatoes, but I found a great recipe for doing "grill fries."  In a large bowl, I mix sea salt, garlic powder, chili powder, and onion powder (and anything else I feel like throwing in).  Then I put a potato sliced up like fries in the bowl, dribble just a tablespoon or two of olive oil on it and toss to coat.  I trap the potato slices in the veggie cage, and grill 'em up.  Yummy!  Did it with a sweet potato the other weekend too, also yummy!  Lots of veggies you don't need the cage for either.  I did halved red and green peppers and thick sliced red onion on the grill over the weekend with flank steak.  Used that in lower cal tortillas with light sour cream and a lower fat Mexican cheese blend for awesome fajita goodness.

Granted none of that caters to your Italian tastes you mentioned.  But, no reason why you can't create a dry rub with an Italian theme, or even use pesto as your grilling sauce.  No reason not to make a serving of whole wheat pasta to put whatever you grill on top of, grate a little Parmesan on top and voila!

  • I am a very picky eater... when I was growing up my parents didn't make me eat anything I thought was gross, so I never really explored different foods other than pizza and Chicken McNuggets. I've gotten better now that I'm older about trying new things, but I mostly stick to pasta and cheese. I love alfredo and anything cheesy. I love places like Pizza Hut and Italian restaurants. But as we all know, pasta is full of carbs and will plump you up... so I need some alternatives.

When it comes to vegetables I do not like mine cooked very long if at all. I am not a big fan of squash or potatoes or peas.

I do not like any sauces... like ketchup, bbq sauce, ranch, mayo, etc. Some of these may help my diet but the fact that I like nothing other than garlic and salt makes it difficult to eat anything that other people would consider flavorful and interesting.

I am not a big meat eater, either... I'm not sure why, but I have been avoiding all kinds of meat in the dishes I eat. The only way I like meat is if it's chicken, breaded in something and baked.

Does anyone have any ideas for me? I feel kind of stuck in a rut, not having much of a choice to eat for lunch or dinner on my diet.
