i have been doing this for a week and walking 2 miles every day. I think i am either doing this wrong or i am to tired to tell the difference.... :(

  • Wow, trying to lose 8 in a week sounds like an "as seen on TV" sort of idea. I'm not saying it can't be done - but it would be very difficult. Lets look at some numbers:

    1. Most experts agree 1-2 pounds a week is a resonable (sustainable) weight loss. The exception is people that weigh more than 200 pounds can aim to reduce by 1% of their body weight per week. So at 300lb it is safe to lose up to 3 lbs a week etc. If you regularly lose more than this your body has a hard time keeping up with the enzymes needed to process fat into energy and you may have gallbladder trouble. And you are more likely to have side effects like low energy, hair loss, mood swings, etc. Plus this is the perfect start to a binge cycle since it starts with severe deprevation, which most food addicts inadvertantly use to increase the pleasure of the binge later.

    2. Your body needs a certain number of calories per day just to maintain function, moving you around for normal work/home activities, fighting off germs, and using your brain actually takes more than you would think. When you go under that number your body doesn't dig deeper into the fat pockets, instead it aims to conserve energy by shutting down your energy levels down to hibernation mode. Most "straight size" people shouldnt go under 1200 per day, but if you are large you may need 1500, 1700, or even 2000 to keep the body from fighting you. You can look around online for this metabolic requirement. At my weight and lifestyle I actually need about 1700 per day, if I go under I don't lose weight faster, I just get cranky and tired.

    3. Each pound of fat represents about 3500 calories. If you reduce your intake by 500 calories for 1 week this should result in a weight loss of 1 lb of fat. (other weight may be water weight). To lose 2 lbs in a week you need to reduce by 1000 calories a day. To lose 8 lbs of fat in a week? Four times more ...than that- a calorie deficit of 4000 cal per day.!Wow, thats a lot! In order to reach a calorie deficit of 4000 calories a day, without going under my 1700 minimum intake... ?

Starting with the calories I need to maintain = 2700 cal a day. Reduced to 1700 per day gets me a deficit of 1000 cal. That means the other 3000 cal would have to come from workout. I burn about 500 cal an hour at running or swimming (working hard enough I can't talk steadily.) To burn 3000 calories I would have to run or swim for 6 hours a day at a high intensity to lose 8lbs of fat per week.

I don't know about you, but if I could/would run 6 hours a day I wouldn't need the program... I would be skinny already! Cut yourself some slack. 3lbs is an awesome week - you deserve a pat on the back. The real actually hard part is sticking with it. PROMISE yourself to stick with it - no matter what, and if you fall off track, you MUST start again. If you do that, you will reach your goal - no 6 hours of running per day required.

    God's Love!

2 lbs gone...not bad, was hoping for 3. I'm starting a couch to 5K program this week so hopefully next week will be a big loss with all the jogging I'm doing this week. Everybody keep up the good work.

  • Ok Audra, we can't wait to hear your top secret.  I'm guessing new body parts...but that's just my guess.  lol

  • Were you hoping to lose 8 in one week?  3 sounds really reasonable and something you should be really proud of.  I did lose 7 my first week, but we have to know that was some water weight in there too.  I don't expect my 2nd week will be nearly as big.
