  • Cheers have you told your friend about mrs. dash its a seasoning mix that doesn't have any salt added.  I can get it up here in Maine not sure about where you live.  Also I have seen a no salt substitue also.  I like the mrs dash because you have different flavorings that you can try.  Hope this helps.  Teri

  • I'm going to try to post again - the moderator pulled my posting because I mentioned a product by name :( Here it is again and I xxx'd out the spice name in hopes this is "acceptable".

XXX. XXXX is a great brand for no-salt spice mixes (plus they make a good marinade). Just be sure to read the labels on EVERYTHING - products marked as "healthy heart" usually have high sodium. Also, some products change ingredients from time to time so something you thought was safe can be too high. I also learned the hard way that even fresh products, like raw chicken, can have salt water injected, so you have to read even those items. You can google low salt or low sodium recipes and find alot of good sites for low sodium products and recipes. Good luck! It takes some time to get started but once you do it's not so hard. Also your taste buds will adjust (tell your friend to hang in there) and soon he will be happy to eat foods w/less sodium.

One other thing - eating out is brutal - most foods in America are heavily salted. I go to the websites for restaurants whenever available and look up nutritional info. Then I write down one or two choices from the restaurants I most likely might visit and keep it in my purse. Then when I unexpectedly end up in a restaurant I can eat something that is healthy - low calorie/low sodium and not make a big deal of it in front anyone else.

Also although celery looks as if it has sodium in it, it has another substance in it that helps lower blood pressure - eating 4-5 stalks (pieces) daily helps many people drop their bp by 10 points or more. Potassium is important so oranges, bananas and other high potassium foods can help lower bp.

  • Thank you, for the infro.  The you have any thing else for me that will help with high blood pressure.

  • TIP:  Read soup labels very carefully--esp Campbell's brand.  Though most are low in calories, the sodium is through the roof!  In fact, each serving contains more than most folks' daily allowances...can you believe it???

    Reading labels on everything helps...

    Good luck!

  • I add no salt to anything, I eat no processed foods, not even salad dressings, no sodas, nada.  I don't have high blood pressure but I blow up like a balloon after pizza, chinese food, things like that, so I don't eat any of that stuff anymore.  Buy low salt everything even crackers.  I don't even miss it.

  • Check you store for Mr Dash and other herbs.  You can use lemon pepper, and onion.  Go to the website to see what they said about hight blood presure.  They should have some helpful imformation for you.

  • Thanks for the low-sodium tips, StefanieJo! I'm going to suggest them to my friend!

  • I have an issue with high blood pressure and so I have cut down on my salt intake. I use a mix of spices like chili powder, garlic powder, onion powder, dry parsley, etc. Look thru some cook books to get a good idea of what spices are usually called for and stock up on those basic herbs and spices. There are no salt seasoning blends that are really good too. I like to experiment with different spice blends for chicken and potatoes and other roasting vegetables. I also use a lot of fresh garlic, fresh lemon, and pepper. They always give great flavor to fish or chicken.

Good luck! Once you eliminate the salt and sub with fresh herbs, spices, etc. you won't even notice its gone. Now I notice when salt has been added to my food!!

  • Anyone have any tips for cutting out salt? My friend has high blood pressure and his doctor told him to cut out salt, but not sure what to replace it with to make food more tasty.
