  • Flagirl,

Typically, we do not recommend the Lower Carb line for people with diabetes as their blood sugar may get too low.  However, if you have found that you need to keep your carbs to 6 grams at breakfast and 12 grams at lunch and dinner, then the Lower Carb Shakes may work for you.  These shakes have between 4-6 grams of carbohydrates (depending on flavor), with only 2 net carbs.  Just be sure that you and your doctor closely monitor your blood sugar to make sure that it does not drop too low.

    Sincerely,

  • Morning Ali and Hale60,

Thanks for your responses.. My Dear GP has no clue as to diet so he sent me to a RD who put me on the standard ADA diet... My BG went right up so I dropped off on the Grain Carbs and it came back down.. So  I decided to do my own research and found a lot of confusion as to diet for a pre-diabetic or any diabetic for that matter. Now my meals consist  of considerably less high GI foods.. Reading currently 'the new Glucose Revolution' by Jennie Brand-Miller and Dr. Richard K. Bernstein's 'Diabetes Solution '.  Dr. Bernstein does a monthly teleseminar which I find most helpful and informative.

I strive for around 6 grams of carbs for breakfast and 12 for both lunch and dinner. That pretty much leaves off any white grain foods and does include whole grains with  much more fiber. This I now find easy to do. Have given up most sugary desserts. This way I can keep my BG down around 95 to 100 with my meter readings.

I eat lean meats, eggs and lotsa green and yellow veggies.. Found Dreamfields low carb pasta at my Grocery store [Publix] and Shiratake noodles at the Health Food Store [ they are a soy I believe]. I also do some raw food smoothies for breakfast most mornings following Dr. Oz's recipe from the Oprah tv show. He is also on the Discovery Health Channel.

I hope I haven't given you more info than you needed or wanted. I really would like to know if any of the SF products will fit into my food plan. I would find it very helpful for a quick meal when I am on the road.

  • RD Ali,

  • Hello Flagril,

Thanks for the reply.  Your numbers look good.  I now test once per day instead of three times per day.  My average is 97-101.   I live in Fayetteville, GA.  Was in Panama City Beach  for the last ten days.  Reason for the delay in my response. Yes I walk 5-6 days per week, 30-45 mins., and   Loooooved walking on the beach.  Not in love with walking in general, but I do what I have to do.  I have been intermitantly active over the years, but nothing too structured.  Have found that I really enjoy exercising in a group and want to start  group sessions at my church for women that are diabetic, overweight, heart disease and over 50 y/o.  We women are sometimes reluctant to exercise in public when we are in our prime. I hope this will encourage someone and save a life.  It is also an opprotunity to introduce Slim-Fast into the mix as an alternative to eating too much or wrong. Of course with the approval of their doctors.  My doctor was elated that I'm seeking options to manage my BS.

"The moving finger having rite, moves on."  One of my favorite quotes by Omar Kahum.     Long story short, life keeps on keeping on, and I plan to keep on with it!  Flagril.  Keep me posted with your progress.  I need the encouragement.

PS:  Got a confirmtion response from Registered Dietitian, Ali Auerbach.  I'm on my way.

  • Flagirl,

I'm glad to see that you are testing your blood sugar.  Has your doctor told you how many carbs to stick to at each meal and snack?  According to the American Diabetes Association, it is recommended that people with diabetes aim for 30-45 grams of carbohydrates at each meal, and 15-20 grams of carbohydrates at each snack.  For that reason, we typically do not recommend the Low-Carb Slim-Fast for people with diabetics.  Instead, we aim for the Optima or High Protein lines.  Of course, you should follow your doctor's recommendations, however, as he/she knows your medical history best.

    Sincerely,

  • Hello Ali & Hale60

BS was 122 which is higher than it usually is... I should have added an eggwhite and maybe a low GI veggie.. Just purchased the Glycemic Revolution  so am going to try and follow the lower GI foods that have been tested.. But I know all too well the things to stay away from. The sugars listed on the low carb SF were 6 grams.

  • Hello Hale60,

I am pre diabetic with morning readings between 90 and 100. I tried 1/2 of a low carb chocolate Slim Fast this morning and am about to go and check my BG.  I am 73 y/o and have been an active exerciser for many years.. I walk everyday for between 45 min and an hour. On rainy days I climb on my elliptical machine and go. I much preferr to walk outside as it is usually sunny weather down in South Florida except in times of rainy season '[right now] when I am driven indoors. Hurricanes will soon start up also.. I just hate those.

Will let you know what my meter reading is. Where do you live?

  • hale60,

Slim-Fast Meals and Snacks are nutritional foods that can be readily incorporated into a diabetic meal plan.  The American Diabetes Association recognizes that the use of meal replacements such as Slim-Fast is an effective way to lose weight.  In fact, studies show that people with type 2 diabetes who follow the Slim-Fast plan not only lose weight but also improve their diabetes control along with improving risk factors associated with heart disease such as reduced cholesterol levels and lower blood pressure.

You should consult your physician or diabetes educator before following the Slim-Fast Plan or any other diet plan to address your individual nutritional needs, however.  It is important to closely monitor blood glucose levels while following any weight loss program, in order to see what may need adjustment in your diet.

As for the butter pecan flavor, it is not something we currently have in the market.  Our development team, however, is always testing new products and flavors and conducting consumer research.

  • Hi!  I'm Hale60 and new to Slim Fast and this group.  Will Slim Fast shakes provide the same  protection against blood-sugar spikes as Glucerna?  I am "diabetic", but have been taken off insulin shots by my doctor.  I am trying to manage it with correct eating and 6 days/30 min. walks per week.  So knowing what is the same as or near the same would be a great help to me.

PS:  Could Slim Fast consider and market the butter pecan flavor?  Please.

    Regards,
