  • missingnakota,

The lowest calorie amount we recommend is 1200 calories per day.  Eating fewer calories than that can actually hinder weight loss and may lead to nutrient deficiencies.  It is only recommended to go below this calorie amount if you are under physician supervision.

As for exercise, you really should consult your doctor since he/she knows your condition best.

  • Hi Daphne and welcome!  I have 55 pounds I need to get off of me and I am completely sedentary. I began keeping a log of every thing I put in my mouth and the calories and fat it contains (I keep my calculator handy in case I need to figure out smaller portions). I set a daily goal for myself which is between 900 and 1000 calories a day and around 22 grams of fat. It helps that my husband has been a vegetarian for 20 years and I am nearly one. That is barely any food compared to what I used to eat, but eventually the cravings ease. I just refuse to put any extras into my mouth. I want my goal. Anyway, I lost 3 pounds in the first week and now 2 in the second week. I would not be able to do this if I wasn't keeping a detailed log. It is vital. I just bought a mini-trampoline but discovered that my balance is so bad that I keep falling off. So, I got some books from the library on how to improve my balance. Our freezer is stocked with Boca Burger veggie burgers. They taste like real hamburgers! Just go easy on the mustard, it contains a lot of calories. Plus, I gave up all cheese. That was hard. :o)

As far as exercise for yourself, I would definitely ask your doctor what is good for you to do. I don't have your restrictions so I can do pretty much anything (I guess...I hope!). My problem is, I am just lazy. Lately, since setting my weight loss goal (and daily goal) I have motivation like I've never had. That daily log is a lifesaver for me. That is good that you get out and walk. I plan on doing that. I want a treadmill so badly. I hate the recumbant stationary bike we have. I won't get on it.

My mini-trampoline comes with a circuit training video that demonstrates all the great exercises you can do on it. It is great for toning up and buring calories. Are you able to use one? Please talk to your doc. I want you to reach your goal! Good luck!

ps: We are also sure to take our daily vitamins and calcium supplement. Check with your doc for what is right for you! It's important. I hate water so I drink lots of decaf tea. I also drink V8 fusion for my fruit and vegetable intake. But, it also has calories to count. :o)

Dropping 500 calories a day (3500 a week) will make you lose 1 pound a week.

  • The VA has me using a walker and wheelchair due to arthritis in my spinal nerve and I really need to get this weight off.  I was wondering if I should cut back extremely on my calorie intake and which excercises could be done that I have chosen.  I am up and about with the housework, walking the dog, grocery shopping, and everyday necessities.
