Manual Labor Jobs

  • Thanks for responding.  Last night was my first shift worked while on SF.  I made sure to eat my sensible meal an hour before I left home (7 pm) so I would have plenty of calories (between 500-600) to burn.  I drank plenty of water.  At one am I ate a snack, at 4:30 I drank a SF shake, and at 6:30 I ate another snack (so I would have a bit of energy to do my exercise routine after work.  I did not feel badly at all.  In fact, only 6 days in and I feel better than I have in years.  However, I will make sure to bring a "back up snack" with a few more calories than my normal snacks just in case I do start to feel light headed.  Better to be safe than sorry.  Thanks again for your response and I look forward to posting with you again.

  • Kim,

It is definitely possible if you are doing a lot of lifting for 12 hours a day that you would be burning 1000 calories.  If you want a more accurate measurement, you may want to invest in a heart rate monitor that counts calories burned.  But, I don't think that's necessary.

Are you feeling light-headed or weak on the days that you work those shifts?  If so, you may need to add in a Snack or two, preferably something that combines some carbohydrates and protein (i.e. yogurt & fruit, whole-grain crackers with light cheese, or pretzels and peanut butter).  Also, track your weight loss each week.  If you end up losing more than 2 pounds per week, bump yourself up to the next Slim-Fast Plan.

If you have additional questions, please feel free to call me at 1-800-SLIMFAST (754-6327).

  • Actually................................ I lost 30 pounds when I started working for Wal-Mart,   I worked in the Wal-Mart Bakery in Texas and Nevada- there is a lot of lifting and moving around but all thoses cakes and donuts are VERY tempting.   I regained 10 pounds.   I relocated to Virginia and started working in the Wal_Mart Meat department.   I was taking down pallets weighing up to 60 pounds.      My concern when I transfered to Sam's Club as a cashier was that I would not get enough exercise.   Ho Ho Ho!   I don't walk but I sure do move around alot.   It better to incorporate activity in the lifestyle versus paying a fortune for the gym.

My Darling Girl - When are you going to realize that Being Normal is Not a Virture. Rather.................It denotes a lack of courage.
  • Good morning!  I am 25, and I work 12-hour swing shifts for a carpet manufacturer.  I operate a machine that requires a lot of minor lifting (imagine for 12 hours, taking two 30 minute breaks and a 15 minute break in that time, picking up a ten pound package, carrying it 5 feet, and every putting it on a shelf at knee level or head level.  There's a lot more to it than that, but the activity level is about the same with other parts of the job.)  I used the calorie burn calculator (or whatever it is called) to see how many calories this burns.  I considered this work to be equivalent to walking (general) on an average shift  (I sweat lightly throughout the shift, kind of like I would sweat if I were walking normally for hours.)  With only 4 hours, that's over 800 calories.  That would be like 1000 calories for the whole shift!  Is this calculation inaccurate?  What is a better calculation?  Mind you, I'm not trying to find a reason to cheat on my SF diet, because I only work like this 14 out of 28 days.  I just figured if we can consider moderate housework in our activity log, surely we should be able to consider manual labor.

    Thanks!

    Kim
