    Slim-Fast Meals and Snacks are nutritional foods that can be readily incorporated into a diabetic meal plan.  The American Diabetes Association recognizes that the use of meal replacements such as Slim-Fast is an effective way to lose weight.  In fact, studies show that people with type 2 diabetes who follow the Slim-Fast plan not only lose weight but also improve their diabetes control along with improving risk factors associated with heart disease such as reduced cholesterol levels and lower blood pressure. 

    According to the American Diabetes Association (ADA), people with diabetes should consume 30-45 grams of carbohydrates at each meal, and 15-20 grams of carbohydrates at each snack.  Slim-Fast Optima and High Protein Shakes have approximately 23-25 grams of carbohydrates.  Therefore, if you combine them with a fruit, it should meet the recommendation for a meal. 

    With diabetes alone, you should consult your physician or diabetes educator before following the Slim-Fast Plan or any other diet plan to address your individual nutritional needs. It is important to closely monitor blood glucose levels while following any weight loss program, as medication needs may decrease.  Moreover, because of your additional medical conditions, you should definitely be consulting your physician.

  • I've used SlimFast products more than 20 years, but developed mild diabetes type 2 in 2005. I'm concerned about sugar and carbs....which products are geared more for diabetics? I use mainly the powders and bars, with lots of veggies/fruits/grains/beans.......very high-fiber, low-fat and no-fat.

    I'm also a medical disaster......heart attack, atherosclerosis, scleroderma, hypertension, overweight, gastrointestinal, etc......I take 25 types of medications on a daily basis (no insulin, thank God), several of which increase appetite and/or cause weight gain.

    I'm 59, disabled, widow, and live alone. Any advice would be appreciated. Thanks, and Happy New Year!
