What's a Step Counter?
A step counter is a small electronic device that tracks the number of steps you take. By programming the length of your typical stride, the step counter can convert the number of steps taken into distance.
Take the first step
The recommended goal for better health is about 10,000 steps per day, or about five miles. In other words, 2,000 steps is approximately one mile of walking. If this seems like a lot of walking, don't worry. You don't need to go for a five-mile hike every day. The steps you take from morning 'til night will add up.
Ways to step up your steps
Before you know it, you'll be looking for more opportunities to walk each day! Here are some ways to help you "step up" the number of steps you take each day:
Take the stairs instead of the elevator
Take a dance class
Walk the dog
Use the bathroom on another floor and take the stairs to get there
Take 10 minutes out of your lunch break to go for a stroll
Lose the remote control to your television set
Don't use the car to travel very short distances
Plan an active day trip every now and then (long walks, hiking, walking tours, even mall shopping!)
Consult your physician before starting any exercise program.
